Apply Now for Northwestern Center for Talent Development Courses

We are pleased to be partnering once again with Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development (CTD) after-school program, taking place at St. Benedict Preparatory School this fall.

CTD programs support students who are academically advanced, and we are excited to host these classes for students right here on the block! Classes are available for students in grades 1-6 (descriptions, below) and will take place on 7 consecutive Tuesdays, November 5 – December 17. Classes will run from after school through 4 pm, and the cost is $250. Students will be using their school-issued laptops for some of these courses and will bring their laptops home with them on Tuesday afternoons.

The application portal is now open. Parents/guardians may review the course descriptions below, discuss the class with your child and, if interested, apply as soon as possible. As CTD courses are designed for academically advanced students, they require proof of eligibility (score at/above the 90% in math or reading). Parents of students grades 4-6 should have their child's ASPIRE scores from the summer mailing. Students of grades 1&2 should have their child's most recent MAP scores from conferences this past week. Grade 3 students should have MAP scores from the summer mailing.

To apply:

  • Go to http://my.ctd.northwestern.edu.

  • If you are new to CTD, click on Get Started. If you already have an account, log in.

Science of Flight (Grade 1-2)

How does human flight impact our everyday life? What are the principles of flight that engineers use to innovate designs? Through building models, testing designs, and reflecting and re-engineering, students examine the impact and principles of flight including the math and physics behind it. Using a variety of materials, future engineers and pilots design, build and test models of their own flying machines.

Architecture: From Concrete to Abstract (3-4)

How do architects use math, physics and art to design buildings? Explore the architectural design process using math, physics, storytelling, and visual-spatial reasoning skills. Through hands-on building projects, blueprint sketching, storytelling, and digital modeling software such as SketchUp-Make® 3D, novice architects investigate how buildings come to be and how people interact with the built environment. Using literature as the inspiration, students experience how math and art come together as they design and create their own model buildings.

Coding Construction (5-6)

Using a variety of hardware components including buttons, switches, solenoids and indicators as well as Scratch and Makey Makey boards, students combine hands-on making with coding skills in this interactive course. Through independent and small group work, students explore their own interests and project ideas that incorporate both block programming and electronics.

Blue Ribbon Mass, October 20 at 10:30AM

Come Give Thanks to God for Our 2019 Blue Ribbon School

October 20 at 10:30AM

Parish & School Family Mass

God has blessed our community of faith with an excellent parish school. Our parish school is an integral ministry of our parish passing on our Catholic faith for many generations. And now, we have been recognized for our excellence with the 2019 National Blue Ribbon!

We are inviting all school families to attend this Mass of Thanksgiving. We also invite families to a special celebration in conjunction with the parish welcoming committee after Mass. We will have children's activities, photo/selfie fun and information about our parish school for prospective families. Students should show their Bengal Pride and wear their school uniforms to Mass. We hope to see you there.
