Rachel Gemo, Head of School

Rachel Gemo has served as Head of Parish School at St. Benedict Preparatory School since 2003 and is a veteran Catholic educator and administrator. Guided by her Catholic faith, she is committed to nurturing the academic, spiritual, and personal growth of every child. Ms. Gemo partners closely with families, faculty, and parish leadership to foster a welcoming community rooted in Gospel values, excellence, and service.

Mary Deletioglu, Head of Upper School

Mrs. Deletioglu has completed 16 years at St. Benedict, serving as a mathematics teacher, department chair, high school advisor, and Head of Upper School for the past nine years. Passionate about educating the whole child, she fosters academic excellence, faith, character, and leadership.

She is passionate about creating an intermediate and middle school experience where children are encouraged to embrace the joy of childhood and discover and develop their God-given gifts and talents. Mrs. Deletioglu is committed to providing opportunities for students to deepen their faith, build meaningful relationships, cultivate leadership skills, and become compassionate, lifelong learners who are ready to make a positive impact on the world.
FUN FACT: Known affectionately as "Mrs. D," she enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the outdoors with her husband, trying new recipes, gardening, swimming, and dancing.

Mrs. Rachel Metz, Head of Lower School

Mrs. Metz has been working in education for over 20 years, beginning her 17th year at St. Benedict. She loves getting the chance to watch our students grow from timid three-year-olds into confident elementary school students and on through middle school and high school. She enjoys partnering with teachers and parents to create a path to success for all students.

Fr. Robert Ryan, Pastor

Fr. Robert Ryan serves as Pastor of St. Benedict Parish and Preparatory School in Chicago. He earned a B.A. in Advertising from Michigan State University (2003) and completed an M.A. in Philosophy and Religion (2017), a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (2021), a Master of Divinity (2021), and a Licentiate of Sacred Theology (2023) from the University of St. Mary of the Lake–Mundelein Seminary.

Ms. Jessica Granitz, Preschool Teacher

Ms. Granitz has taught for 13 years in early childhood education, all within preschool classrooms. She is dedicated to building meaningful relationships and creating a positive, inclusive learning community where every child feels valued, respected, and supported. Families entering her classroom will find a joyful, nurturing environment filled with laughter,

engaging experiences, and opportunities that inspire, challenge, and support young learners’ growth.

Ms. Kristin Hayes, Preschool Teacher

Ms. Hayes earned her bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and has dedicated her educational career to early childhood education. She believes young children learn best through a balance of hands-on experiences, play, and academics.

Ms. Cathy Kattner, Preschool Teacher

Ms. Cathy Kattner has always lived right here on the north side of Chicago. She has 2 children who are both graduates of St. Benedict Prep and are now successful young adults. She graduated from Northeastern University with a BA in Early Elementary Education and an additional Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education.

She has been teaching at St. Benedict for over 25 years and is happy to be part of the Preschool Team. She loves teaching and looks forward to seeing bright, happy children eager to learn and have fun while learning.

Mrs. Malgorzata Pikulski, Preschool Teacher

Mrs. Pikulski was born and raised in Poland and moved to Chicago shortly after graduating from the University of Rzeszów. She earned her Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Education from Dominican University. For the past 28 years, Mrs. Pikulski has been teaching preschool in Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools,

and she is excited to beginher twelfth year at SBPS. She is passionate about helping young children grow academically, socially, and spiritually while creating a nurturing, joyful classroom where every child feels valued and loved.
Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Pikulski enjoys spending time with her family and traveling. Her favorite destinations are places surrounded by mountains and beaches, where she can appreciate the beauty of God's creation and nature.

Ms. Sherry Smith, Bengal Cubs/Preschool Aftercare Teacher

Ms. Sherry Smith has been working in Catholic education her entire teaching career. She has taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, kindergarten, Preschool, Computer teacher for grades K-5, and most recently started the Bengal Cubs program, working with two-year-olds. She enjoys introducing the two-year-olds to a variety of art projects, music, circle time, and just being with other children their age.

Mrs. Bailey Fritz, First Grade Teacher

Mrs. Fritz believes that meaningful learning begins with strong relationships. By helping students develop emotional regulation, resilience, and a positive mindset, she creates a foundation that allows academic growth to flourish.

Ms. Gina Zadronzny, First Grade Teacher

Ms. Gina Zadrozny was born and raised in the city of Chicago and attended Catholic school throughout her education and even attended St. Benedict high school for two years. She views teaching in a Catholic school as a vocation, one that she enjoys very much. She believes that teaching young children is one of the most meaningful and rewarding opportunities to shape the future.

She views every child as a unique individual with their own strengths, interests, and potential. Ms. Zadrozny sees her role as an educator to create a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment where children feel valued, encouraged, and excited to learn. Ms. Zadrozny's paramount goal is that every student loves to come to school each day.

Mrs. Zoe Malter, Second Grade Teacher

Mrs. Malter is beginning her 4th year as a teacher. She has been a part of the St. Benedict community since 2009, and she graduated St. Ben’s High school in 2013. Since then, she has taught as a Preschool Aide, a 4th Grade Teacher and is now starting her third year as a 2nd Grade teacher. Mrs. Malter graduated with her Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from National-Louis

University in 2025. She focuses on using positive reinforcement and social-emotional learning to create a supportive and engaging classroom environment. Building strong relationships with her students, their families, and the school community is at the heart of her teaching.

Ms. Yasmin Suleiman, Second Grade Teacher

Ms. Yasmin Suleiman has been teaching for 21 years and was born and raised right here in the beautiful city of Chicago! She believes in meeting students where they are in their learning and that all students have the ability to reach their goals. In her classroom, students' thoughts and ideas are appreciated and respected. Her students are considered friends who have a safe place to be themselves.

Mrs. Nelson, in her seventh year of teaching, believes learning should have a purpose. Mrs. Brighid Matvias, Second Grade Substitute Teacher for Jacqueline Nelson (on maternity leave) August through November and for Zoe Malter (will be on maternity leave beginning January) through May

Mrs. Matvias has served as a substitute teacher at St. Ben's for the last 9 years. She is thrilled to be teaching second grade this year! She believes in creating a classroom that is fun, challenging, and supportive, where every student feels comfortable, confident, and successful.

Ms. Carlino has been working in education for more than 12 years. She spent 2 years working at the British School of Chicago as an elementary assistant. Ms. Maia Gillet, Fourth Grade Teacher

With a background in art, Ms. Gillet loves helping students grow into creative, engaged learners. She discovered her passion for teaching while teaching English in South Korea and has worked with elementary students ever since. Before joining St. Ben's, she taught in independent, Chicago Public, and Oak Park schools. She is committed to building a joyful, community-centered classroom where students are motivated by their own interests and values.

Ms. Sarah Zinkula, Fourth Grade Teacher

Ms. Zinkula loves being part of the 4th grade team at St. Ben's and teaching math to the entire grade. Now in her tenth year of teaching, she enjoys helping students grow into confident, independent learners by creating a classroom community where curiosity, kindness, and perseverance thrive.

Ms. Melissa Garcia, Fourth Grade Teacher

Ms. Garcia has six years of experience in education. She began her career in early childhood education and now teaches elementary students. and encouraged to grow daily. Families appreciate Ms. Garcia's welcoming approach and open communication. She values strong partnerships with parents and believes that collaboration between home and school is essential to helping every student succeed and reach their full potential.
FUN FACT: Outside the classroom, I enjoy staying active by running 5K and 10K races, weightlifting, and practicing yoga. I'm also a passionate sports fan who loves cheering on Chicago's teams, especially the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

Ms. Jennifer Bertram, Fifth Grade Teacher

With 10 years of teaching experience, including 5 years in a 5th-grade classroom, Ms. Bertram is dedicated to helping students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Mr. Zachary Berning, Fifth Grade Teacher

Mr. Berning is starting his fourth year as a fifth-grade teacher and his second year at St. Benedict. He is passionate about helping students grow in their leadership abilities, especially in relation to our Catholic faith. He believes parents are the primary educators of their children, and that their partnership with teachers is incredibly valuable in bringing student success.

He strives to make sure each child feels seen and known in the classroom, and that they get to know and experience God's love and faithfulness for each of us.

Mrs. Sara Murray, Fifth Grade Teacher

Originally from Chicago’s North Shore suburbs, Mrs. Murray attended a Catholic elementary school and is excited to continue her career in Catholic education. She has dedicated the past 10 years to working with children in a variety of roles, from assistant teacher to classroom teacher. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Management from California State University–San Bernardino before returning to Chicago to pursue her passion for teaching.

In December 2022, Mrs. Murray earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Saint Xavier University and spent the past three years teaching third grade at St. Andrew. She is thrilled to be joining the St. Ben’s community and is excited to begin her first year as a Bengal!

Ms. Lucy Koch, Fifth Grade Substitute Teacher for Zach Berning (on paternity leave) Sept-November

Lucy Koch is an educator and learning professional serving as the fifth-grade long-term substitute teacher. With a background in English, writing instruction, and curriculum development, she brings curiosity, creativity, and a love of language to the classroom.

Lucy strives to create a welcoming, engaging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, taking academic risks, and growing as learners and classmates.

Ms. Maisy Richards,

Ms. Maisy Richards is so excited to begin her fourth year at St. Benedict Prep as a Middle School ELA and homeroom teacher! She is looking forward to discussing riveting novels and watching her students develop into passionate and engaged readers and writers. Mr. Mike Thallemer

Mr. Thallemer brings a strong background in writing, storytelling, and education to his Language Arts and Creative Writing classroom. He creates a classroom environment that balances thoughtful reading and writing instruction with creativity, discussion, and personal voice.

Students are encouraged to think deeply, discuss honestly, write with purpose, and take creative risks as they build confidence as readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators.

Ms. Zora Voynovich

Ms. Zora Voynovich is a lifelong Chicagoan who loves exploring the city's diversity. She believes everyone is a math person and is passionate about helping students build their mathematical confidence. She fosters a supportive classroom where curiosity, critical thinking, productive struggle, and a love of learning thrive. Ms. Voynovich feels lucky to share in her 8th grade students' final year at SBPS, celebrating their growth and accomplishments as Bengals.

FUN FACT: I used to coordinate an overnight summer camp, where I especially loved organizing the end-of-week Color War competition and helping campers build lifelong friendships.

Mr. John Vincent

Mr. Vincent graduated from Grinnell College with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Ms. Olivia Beals

Ms. Beals has a background in working with youth, science, and treasures her time teaching at St. Ben’s. She is excited to bring her research experience to the classroom, helping students sharpen their inquiry, observation, and writing skills. Ms. Beals appreciates celebrating students' various wins and modeling thoughtful question-asking.

Mr. Dylan Cole

Mr. Cole is beginning his third year of teaching after completing his Master's of Education through the University of Notre Dame. He believes in the importance of centering the science classroom around the students to create a meaningful learning environment. When the student is at the center of the classroom, they learn how to be effective problem solvers while simultaneously being formed in mind, body, and soul.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Mr. Stephen Stare

Mr. Stare has over a decade of middle school social studies experience. His teaching centers on analysis and inquiry, believing these skills to be essential to building a well-rounded understanding of history. Rather than presenting the past as settled fact, he encourages students to ask questions, examine evidence, and think critically. His classroom is a welcoming space where curiosity drives learning and every perspective is met with respect.

FUN FACT: I worked as a Zookeeper at Brookfield Zoo before teaching.

Kate Heinzelmann

Miss Heinzelmann brings one year of middle school teaching experience and is passionate about creating a classroom where students feel both supported and challenged. She believes in fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and continuous growth while building meaningful relationships with students and families. Through open communication and a commitment to serving every child, Miss Heinzelmann strives to create a positive learning environment where all students can succeed.

Ms. Kelsh recently graduated from Loyola University Chicago, where she obtained her Master’s in Education with a focus on Social Studies, and will be a Middle School Social Studies and Homeroom Teacher this year. She believes that building meaningful relationships is key to building a dynamic classroom that helps every student succeed. Ms. Kelsh is excited to work with the vibrant St. Ben’s community!

Mr. Andrew Galus

Mr. Andrew Galus is an award-winning teacher with many years of experience, working in middle school education in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Galus firmly believes in helping students to discover new interests and develop confidence in their abilities. He believes in creating a welcoming, meaningful and engaging environment within the classroom community that promotes growth and allows students the opportunity to grow in their faith.

FUN FACT: I enjoy collecting baseball pocket schedules and listening to baseball games on the radio.

Mrs. Agata Ballenger, Band and Strings Teacher

Mrs. Ballenger has taught at St. Benedict Prep for seven years after earning her degree in Music Education. She loves introducing students to engaging music and meaningful performances throughout the year. She believes God is at the center of all we do and enjoys helping students grow into confident, compassionate, and active members of their community through music and faith.

FUN FACT: I can teach 19 different instruments!

Mrs. Maryanne Johnson, Early Childhood Music and Art Teacher

Mrs. Johnson's music program at St. Benedict Prep (PreK-1st grade) nurtures a child's musicality and creativity through song games, improvisation, and movement. Students develop rhythmic skills by exploring a variety of classroom percussion instruments as well.

Mrs. Johnson's Kindergarten art classes encourage creative expression and fine motor skill development with a focus on teaching foundational elements like line, shape, texture, and color. In addition to early childhood programs, Mrs. Johnson also offers a beginner level guitar class as an elective to Middle School students at St. Ben's.
FUN FACT: Mrs. Johnson owns and can play the Australian wind instrument known as the didgeridoo!
CREDENTIALS: Mrs. Johnson earned a Bachelor's degree of Fine Arts at Wayne State University in Detroit. She also completed the basic certification program for Early Childhood Education from Truman College in Chicago. Mrs. Johnson still teaches Wiggleworms and Kids Piano classes part time on the weekends at the Old Town School of Folk Music.

Mrs. Hannah Thompson, 2nd-5th General Music Teacher/ 6-8th Theater Teacher/ Choir Director

Hannah Thompson feels very blessed to continue her path as a music educator and theater instructor at St. Benedict, now in her sixteenth year of teaching. Her degrees include a Bachelor of Music from Chicago College of Performing Arts, and a Master’s in Vocal Performance from North Park University.

Along with directing the a cappella choir at Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, performing private vocal recitals and maintaining a private vocal studio, Hannah is also a certified Orff-Schulwerk music teacher. This unique method exposes her students in grades 2-5 to a highly creative and student-centered form of music education. Her passion is encouraging a love for music and theater in her students at St. Ben’s.

Dr. Zhang, String Teacher Grades 1-8

Dr. Zhang is excited to return to St. Benedict Prep School for her second year. She is passionate about helping students build confidence through music and creativity. Mrs. Jacqualyn Stancin, Art Teacher 1st-8th, STEAM Team Lead

Mrs. Stancin has worked as an art educator for 18 years in various educational settings. Over the last 15 years, she has developed art curriculum with a hands-on approach exposing students to a wide variety of materials and encouraging creative thinking in action. Mrs. Stancin’s goal is to help students develop strong visual literacy to use art as a communication tool.

Mrs. Emily Houlihan graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in Middle Childhood Education and holds an ESL endorsement from the American College of Education. After 15 years at St. Benedict Preparatory School, she is entering her fourth year teaching K–5 STEM. Her program emphasizes hands-on, collaborative projects that focus on the learning process, digital citizenship,

Ms. Caitlin McDonough, Lower School Spanish Teacher, Grades K-3

Ms. McDonough is in her 14th year teaching Spanish in the Lower School at St. Benedict Preparatory. She earned her B.A. in the Teaching of Spanish from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and studied for a year at the University of Barcelona in Spain.

Her classroom emphasizes communicative language instruction in a caring environment, giving students the unique opportunity to develop Spanish proficiency and cultural awareness beginning at an early age.FUN FACT: My grandparents were among the first graduates of St. Ben's high school in the 1950’s!

Mr. Oyler has been working in secondary education for more than thirty years. Ms. Amanda Genge, Middle School PE Teacher

Ms. Amanda Genge is a middle school physical education teacher and coach with ten years of experience. Amanda is passionate about building confidence, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship while helping students grow as both athletes and individuals.

Dave Regnier, PE Teacher, Grades 3 & 4

Coach Dave is excited for his 5th year teaching PE at St. Ben's. He has been coaching in the CCYL since 1994 and loves to see the growth of his students and players, both on and off the court. Mr. McDaniel has been working in Physical Education and Recreation with children for over 15 years and enjoys different ways to keep students healthy and active. Mrs. Lisa Wiederkehr, Campus Librarian

Mrs. Wiederkehr has been a librarian for 32 years, working in both public and school libraries. She is passionate about finding the perfect books for her students to get them excited about reading. She believes the library is the heart of the school and is lucky to get to watch her students grow as readers throughout their years at St. Benedict.

Nurse Perez, RN

Nurse Perez started at St. Benedict in 2003 as a paramedic/trainer for all high school sporting events. Paramedic now for over 20 years, Nurse since 2012, American Red Cross instructor, CPI instructor and Stop the Bleed instructor. I started full-time as St Bens nurse in 2013 and have not looked back! Mr. Chris Deakins, Athletic Director

Mr. Deakins has been working in elementary education for more than 20 years. He believes that all students can be successful in interscholastic athletics and physical education. Institutional Advancement

Mr. Joe Accardi, Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations

Mr. Accardi, now in his 36th year in Catholic education, taught high school and middle school for 15 years prior to becoming a school principal for seven years. Serving the administration here at St. Benedict Prep for the last 16 years, he has come to see the greatest asset of the St. Benedict Prep being the generous and compassionate community that is St. Ben's.

The work of advancing the mission of our school has been his most recent passion that brings him in contact with all the constituencies served by our parochial school. Beginning with our Annual Parent Mixer to Oktoberfest, the Annual School Fund, and the Gala in spring, so many different opportunities are realized for the benefit of all the students. Mr. Accardi also assists in our Middle School as an advisor, 6th grade Agora experiential learning co-lead, and moderator of the Middle School Service Committee.

Mr. Ben Mazzone, Tuition Office Manager & Gifts Processing Coordinator

Mr. Mazzone worked in directional advertising and specialty advertising industry for twenty-two years. In his Tuition Office Management position, he brings a strong customer service background and believes in responding to inquiries and requests in a timely manner.

His aim is to respond to all requests within twenty-four hours or less. He enjoys partnering with the school families and making St. Benedict School place that families can trust to do what is best for their family & children.

Catherine Nota, Preschool Administrative Assistant

Cathy Nota has been working at St. Benedict Prep for twenty-four years. She started as the Assistant to the Athletic Director of the High School and Elementary School. At that time one Athletic Director handled both school’s athletic programs. When the elementary school hired its own Athletic Director, she continued working for the high school athletic program.

She also was the Food Service Coordinator for St. Ben’s, handling the free/reduced lunch program for all on campus. After the closing of the high school, she accepted the position of Administrative Assistant/Receptionist in the Preschool. Today, you will find Cathy working in the preschool with our youngest Bengals!

Carol Dodovich, Lower School (Grades K-3) Administrative Assistant

Mrs. Dodovich has been with SBPS for 13 years. After working as a kindergarten assistant for four months, she moved into the position of administrative assistant for students in grades K–5. There is nothing like being a part of the SBPS community, and Mrs. Dodovich was thrilled to return after both of her sons graduated from St. Ben's High School!

Ms. Galindo comes from the hospitality and music industry. This will be her 2nd year in a school setting. Ms. Galindo values community, creativity and equality for all.
