SEL Theme of the Month! (October)

Social-Emotional Learning Focus

This year, our school will focus on a different social-emotional learning (SEL) theme each month for all students. These skills help students build strong relationships, make responsible decisions, manage emotions, and become positive members of our school community. Just like academic skills, social-emotional skills are important for success in school and beyond.

October Theme: Listening

Why Effective Listening Matters in Middle School

Listening is an important skill that helps students learn, build friendships, and show respect for others. Effective listeners do more than just hear words. They pay attention to the speaker, think about the message, and respond respectfully. These skills help students understand instructions, participate in discussions, and create positive relationships with both peers and teachers. As students move through middle school, strong listening skills contribute to a supportive and successful school community.

How Families Can Support This Skill at Home

Families can help children develop strong listening habits by modeling effective communication. Encourage your child to:

  • Pay attention by making eye contact and putting away distractions when someone is speaking.

  • Think about the message by focusing on the main idea and asking questions to improve understanding.

  • Respond respectfully by waiting their turn to speak and showing that they value what others have shared.

At home, practice active listening during family conversations by taking turns speaking and sharing what was heard before responding. These simple habits help students become thoughtful listeners both in and out of the classroom.

Challenge for Students

This month, choose one conversation each day to practice being an effective listener. Remember:

👀 Eyes on the speaker
🧠 Mind on the message
👂 Respectful response

Small improvements in listening can make a big difference in learning, communication, and building strong relationships.
