This year, our school will focus on a different social-emotional learning (SEL) theme each month for all students. These skills help students build strong relationships, make responsible decisions, manage emotions, and become positive members of our school community. Just like academic skills, social-emotional skills are important for success in school and beyond. 

August & September Theme: Greetings

Why Greetings Matter in Middle School

Greeting others may seem simple, but it is an important life skill. A friendly "hello," making eye contact, or acknowledging someone can help create a welcoming and respectful environment. Greetings help students build confidence, strengthen friendships, show kindness, and make others feel included. As students move through middle school, positive interactions with both their peers and teachers can make a big difference in building a strong school community.

How Families Can Support This Skill at Home

Encourage your child to practice greeting others throughout the day, whether it's family members, neighbors, teachers, coaches, or friends. Talk about how a positive greeting can set the tone for a conversation and help build strong relationships. Families can also model respectful communication and discuss how small acts of kindness, such as saying "good morning" or asking someone how they're doing, can have a lasting impact on others.

Challenge for Students: Try greeting one new person each week this month. A simple smile, wave, or "hello" can help make someone's day a little brighter!
