Update in Discipline Policy for the 2019-2020 School Year

The St. Benedict Preparatory School student conduct portion of the handbook states in part;   “St. Benedict Preparatory School school affirms the fact that we are all children of God and human beings. We are a forgiving community committed to the growth and development of our students. The consequence system in place at St. Benedict is designed to help students reflect and grow following errors and or mistakes in judgment.” With this in mind, St. Benedict has revamped the Discipline Policy. The newly-structured program is designed to support each student as they grow, learn and correct mistakes, and ultimately develop a sense of pride in being a kind, loving, faith-filled member of the St. Benedict community.

Supporting administration in this new system will be Mr. Andy Galus who will serve as our Director of Discipline. In this role, Mr. Galus will be scheduling and moderating detentions as well as helping guide students as they reflect on their behaviors and work to grow.  He will be in direct communication with Ms. Deletioglu and Ms. Gemo.

The new program will include a demerit system. Each student will have a demerit card they are responsible to have at all times. Level A and B infractions will receive a demerit. When a student receives five demerits during the course of the trimester, a detention will be assigned.   The demerits will provide students with opportunities to correct the behavior prior to any consequence or parent communication. As our middle school students grow in independence, this system will encourage students to become more autonomous. 

If a student warrants a level C detention, that will be issued and assigned at the moment of the infraction. A level D infraction will be sent at the moment of the infraction to the Administration, Ms. Deletioglu and Ms. Gemo and the proper consequence for the action will be designated.

Detentions will be held after school on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 in room 229. Mr. Galus will schedule level A, B, and C detentions and contact the parents via email of the date and reasons for the detention. Students and families will be given one day notice prior to the detention and assigned detentions will not be rescheduled for any reason, except in the case of student school day absence.  Tardy detentions will be handled by Mrs. Moore and still be served in the morning (Monday-Friday) from 7:00 - 7:30 am. We will also be continuing the one grace tardy per trimester.
