Sports Journalism


Course Description
Students who are interested in writing and sports, this is the Agora for you! What could be better than to watch your favorite local sports team, and write about the sport you love! This program will focus on the study of sports journalism. Students will learn about sports writing with a focus on interviewing, writing sports columns, profiles, feature stories and news reports on local teams. Students will report on Spring Athletic teams including major league, college, and high school teams in the Midwest. Students will be required to produce a sports newsletter as part of this Agora group.

Meeting Daily: Times will vary based on Major League, College, and High School Spring Sports Schedules, which come out at a later date. There will be some travel expected as part of this trip.

Julie Fox attended the University of Illinois at Chicago on a Division I softball scholarship and completed her Bachelor's Degree in English in 2001. She has worked at St. Benedict for thirteen years and currently serves as Secondary Librarian, English Teacher, House System Director, and Yearbook Moderator. She is avid athlete interested in all aspects of sport. Julie is a member of Loyola Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame (2007), the University of Illinois at Chicago's Athletic Hall of Fame Special Mention (2007), and the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Hall of Fame (2010).

Michael Hilty is in his sixth year working at SBPS.  He has working in every level of the school during his time, and is currently a secondary school physical education teacher.  Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Mike played football and ran track at Capital University, and spent two years in Europe coaching and playing football.  Mike came to Chicago in 2009 to coach college football at nearby North Park University.  At North Park he also received his MA in Education, worked in recruiting and strength and conditioning for the athletic department.
