Musical Theater Through Film

Course Description: The mountains of Austria, the mythical land of Oz, and the streets of New York City . . . what could these three locations possibly have in common? They are all settings of classic movie musicals. This course will explore the revival of the musical via Hollywood, examining the nuances of musical theater created for film and the effect that it had on American culture and the future of musical theater. Students can expect to see, discuss, and write about a number of films, directors, and performers.
