Honors English Required Reading 2016
In order to provide St. Benedict Prep students with a challenging college preparatory experience and to offer an opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school, the English Department offers Advanced Placement Literature and Composition as an option during the senior year. Students can sit for the AP test in May of their senior year; their scores on the test may be accepted by the colleges they attend to replace general education courses in English.
The English Department prepares students to be successful beginning in their sophomore year by offering honors-level English classes. These classes feature accelerated pacing, more challenging readings, and more in-depth research and writing assignments. One of these assignments is a required summer reading project over the summer. (This assignment is in addition to the Read Around the Block initiative in which the entire secondary school participates.)
Students enrolled in honors-level English courses are invited to participate in secure, grade-specific, online discussions created by their teachers regarding specific elements of the texts they are reading. These discussions prepare students for the demands of the classes they will be taking in the fall and allow them to broaden their exposure to quality literary texts.
Students enrolled in honors-level English classes for the 2016-2017 school year are reading the following:
- Honors World Literature (grade 10): Between Shades of Grey by Rupta Sepetys
- Honors American Literature (grade 11): selections of early American nonfiction
- Advanced Placement Literature and Composition (grade 12): Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Each student enrolled in the courses above has been invited to the secure, online discussions. If your student has not received his/her invitation, please contact Carrie Mocarski, English/Language Arts Department Chair, at email@example.com.
